What is breakdown & how it affects the organization’s goal ?

Breakdown / Failure means Unscheduled stop of the equipment, performing loss of defined function. Breakdown & failure has minor difference. 

Failure 
When the equipment condition reaches an unacceptable level. Whatever it may be, when it reaches an unacceptable level, it’s still operating or could be operating.  
Loss of the equipment defined function lasts for less than 10 minutes
Failure = Without parts replacement.

Breakdown
Breakdown means that equipment is going to stop functioning.
Loss of the equipment defined function lasts for more than 10 minutes
Breakdown = With parts replacement
So breakdown is the unexpected stoppage of an equipment where a part is required or a repair over 10 min.
The word “Breakdown” seems to be self-explanatory. Webster’s definition of a breakdown is: “A failure to function, a function loss, failure to progress or have an effect”. Machinery Breakdown means a sudden and accidental breakdown of an Object, or part.

How breakdown affects the organization’s goal ?
Machine breakdown can cause delays in the production system. Due to these delays, work activities are completed later than the planned time. The delays in workstations affect the whole production system and lead to deviations from target throughput. 

Breakdown typically causes downtime and interrupts production. It can also be difficult to find the root cause of a breakdown when no maintenance strategy is in place. Finally, breakdown maintenance can raise health and safety issues if technicians are rushing to fix a problem and taking risks to do so.
